Today’s event was The Onesies, our class talent show. Everyone either performed individually or in a group, and there was a little bit of everything– singing, dancing, magic tricks, juggling, and even a scene from Hamilton. It was so fun seeing everyone’s talents.
Now, if I were being biased, first place would obviously go to L&N Illusions, Nardeen and I’s card magic act (lollll). But everyone put so much time and effort into their performances that I wanted to rank this as honestly as I could. So, here are my top three…
- Dzana x Desta
My favorite performance of the night was definitely Dzana x Desta, a collaboration between Yale’s Afro-fusion dance group and Ethiopian and Eritrean dance group. This was such a good way to end the show! The dance mashups were so fun to watch, and the music choices kept the energy up the whole time. You could tell they practiced a lot to learn the choreography because everything flowed so well, and everyone looked like they were having so much fun on stage. The crowd was sooo into it from beginning to end, and it was one of those performances where you couldn’t help but smile while watching.
2. “Your Obedient Servant” — Kehinde & Naomi
Second place goes to Kehinde and Naomi’s performance of “Your Obedient Servant” from Hamilton. Their acting and singing were both so good, but what really made it for me was their facial expressions. They committed to every line, and it honestly felt like I was watching Hamilton again (loll). Their different energies played off each other so well!
3. Juggling Juno — Safa & Yasmin
Third place has to go to Juggling Juno by Safa & Yasmin. They came out to Shakira, which immediately got everyone’s attention, and then they tricked us. At first it looked like they were just going to juggle one orange, but then they picked up the other two, and suddenly they were juggling three while adding little dance moves in between. It was such a random but creative idea, and it worked so well!
Overall, The Onesies ended up being one of my favorite nights of the program. I loved getting to see a different side of everyone outside of class. Everyone was so supportive of each other, and you could really tell that we all weren’t afraid to just have fun. It made for a really entertaining night, and I’m glad we got to experience it together.
I also want to give a HUGE thank you to Jonathan and Paul for putting the whole night together. It was clear how much time and energy they put into making sure everything ran smoothly and that everyone had whatever they needed, whether that was instruments, props, or equipment. They really made the night feel special!
It’s hard to believe the program is already coming to an end 🙁 I’m definitely sad to be leaving, but I can’t think of a better way for us to wrap up these past few weeks than by celebrating each other and ending the program with a night like this. <3
