As our study abroad program comes to a close, I can’t help but reflect on all of my experiences in Cape Town these past 6 weeks. While we’ve had so many fun excursions and visited a multitude of amazing places, what I will miss most are the little moments shared in between. The moments where we didn’t do anything too extraordinary, but rather became closer as a cohort and made Cape Town feel more like home.
Here is a list of the little things I will miss most as I head back home:
Walking outside every morning and seeing Table Mountain
Waiting 30 minutes because someone was “almost ready”
Desperately searching for quality sweet treats around Seapoint
Bouncing back and forth between the same 3 restaurants (#makewarriors) as we decided where to eat (often took longer than us actually eating)
Squeezing like a pack of sardines into our Uber XL, which never really gave XL
The portable power bank making its rounds…with Allam somehow always needing it first
Playing tension filled games like Mafia and Paranoia until way too late in the night
Movie nights where no one could agree on what to watch
Taking turns on everyone’s digi cam, then, sequentially, looking through photo albums after every fun excursion
Listening to the horrible singing during karaoke nights at Mojo Market
Inside jokes that make no sense to anyone else and bursting out into endless laughter
Kehinde debating on her Love Island hot takes
Impatiently waiting for our food to arrive during family dinner
Late-night eats and debriefs in the conference room after a long day
Sitting in comfortable silence while editing our film or doing work
The subdued excitement and enthusiasm whenever we spotted animals at the safari
Saying goodnight and then talking for another hour
Not needing a plan, just knowing someone would always be around
Watching people become more themselves as the weeks went on
